Courtmacsherry

Courtmacsherry is a jewel, a historic village nestled between broadleaf woods and pristine sea. It's a village loved by many, villager and visitor alike. Courtmac has escaped the worst of Celtic Tiger development and it's 3 great assets; the elegant and unusual one sided main street, the swathe of woods, and the bay itself, are mostly still intact. Courtmac has however endured change, and it's not all been positive, so making sure anything else that's done is done right is important.
Being overlooked by the Tiger has been both good and bad.

What’s been good is that our greatest asset the bay, part of our visual commons (owned by the whole community), is still there for us all to enjoy.

A Marina ?

Recently however a proposal to build a private marina on the bay has been made. There is no doubt that Courtmac could benefit from a high quality, world class even, marina but for it it be worth sacrificing even part of our precious bay, it must be just that- of the highest quality - and it's not.

The developers planning application (lodged April 2008) shows proposal that are in fact worse than before;
The area of infill of the foreshore is now 2-3 acres.
The extent of the infill has increased and now stretches from the terrace of cottages down to the hotel entrance.
The marina (water part ) itself has increased in area and is now about 8 (or more) acres.
The number of car park spaces has increased from 92 to 100.
The level of carpark and new sea wall is significantly above the existing road (about 1.5 -2.5 feet in places)-blocking all connection to the sea.
The facilities building, proposed to replace the lovely Carilon Cottage, is bigger and of an inapproriate design.
The exhibition material displayed by the developers was misleading and did not give an accurate picture of the impacts of the development.

Please see the following pages for more detail on the developers proposals and the reaction to their planning application
